The Port of Qingdao connects more than 700 ports across more than 180 countries and regions around the world, and Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport reaches 110 cities worldwide. Qingdao has played host to a several prominent conferences and exhibitions, elevating its international reputation. Qingdao University (QU), a key university in Shandong Province, is located on the bank of Fushan Bay in Qingdao and has flourished in tandem with the city's growth.
The origins of QU can be traced back to its predecessor, Qingdao Specialized Institute of Higher Learning, which was founded in 1909. In 1993, the former Qingdao University, Shandong Textile Engineering Institute, Qingdao Medical College and Qingdao Teachers College were merged into the new QU.
QU has three established campuses, namely the Fushan Campus, Jinjialing Campus, and Songshan Campus, and the Shanghe Campus is currently under planning and construction. It boasts a wealth of teaching and scientific research resources, along with complete infrastructure and facilities.
QU comprises 34 colleges and the Medical Department, offering a diverse range of 79 undergraduate programs. With an enrollment of over 42,000 full-time students, it embraces a vibrant academic community. This includes a cohort of more than 11,000 graduate students, over 30,000 undergraduate students, and over 600 international students. QU prides itself on its esteemed faculty, which is comprised of more than 2,600 full-time teachers, including 464 professors and 895 associate professors. Notably, a remarkable 70% of these full-time teachers possess doctoral degrees. Among the teachers, 87 are national high-level talent, 191 are provincial and ministerial high-level talent, and 26 scholars have been selected into the 2022 "China Highly Cited Scholars" list.
QU sets 12 disciplines and provides 17 first-level discipline doctoral programs and professional degree doctoral programs, 69 first-level discipline master's programs and professional degree master's programs, and 10 postdoctoral mobile stations. QU encompasses two national key disciplines and 20 key disciplines in Shandong Province, 12 of which have ranked among the ESI global top 1%, and 17 of which have been selected among the 2022 Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. It has been shortlisted for the Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Ranking, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and the QS Asia University Rankings. QU ranked among the Top 300 in the Shanghai Ranking's Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2023.
In alignment with major national strategies and the evolving requirements of regional economic and social development, QU has implemented an interdisciplinary integration strategy, strengthened collaborative innovation, and promoted the construction of seven discipline clusters. These strategic initiatives have paved the way for it to achieve higher-quality development. QU has established one national key laboratory jointly established by province and ministry, along with 38 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, engineering research centers, collaborative innovation centers, and humanities and social sciences research bases. With a deep insight into the needs of the times and the country, QU has consistently embarked on explorations at the forefront of science, resulting in the remarkable delivery of high-level scientific and technological achievements.
Driven by a steadfast commitment to the internationalization of its operations, QU focuses on the internationalization of its talent team, talent cultivation, academic research, and campus environment, embracing the world with an open attitude. Up to now, QU has established amicable partnerships with 196 universities across 32 countries and regions and launched more than 200 exchange programs. From 2016 to 2020, QU received more than 1,200 international students on average annually. QU has proactively promoted the construction of the China-SCO Institute of Economy and Trade as an implementation entity, and actively cooperated with SCO countries and with countries along the Belt and Road in various aspects, including talent cultivation, scientific research, achievement transformation, and think tank establishment.
